The Origin of Charms
Charms have been around us in centuries or you can say that it was there since few thousand years ago. People from the pre-historic time used charms mainly to ward off enemy and showed their status. Those charms were mainly made from special looking stones or bones.
There are few known period in our history where charms were widely used in the society. First were the Egyptians where they used the charms to ward off evil and also to symbolize certain things in the society. Because of the strong believe in charms, Egyptians even used it to enhance fertility, assured prosperity and many more. They used charms to prepare for their afterlife too as they believed that with burying the dead body with certain charms, the soul of the dead person will have a good life in heaven or was able to be protected in afterlife.
During the time of Roman Empire, knights believed that having certain type of charms will give them luck during the battle. Charms were widely used as identification by knights and priests in order to get access to their secret society. Charms were kept under the garments and were used as some sort of identification among each other. Beside charms were used as a badge, they sometime used as a key to open some secret passages to their underground society. Beside those, families that had high social status or political standing during the Roman Empire, they have certain type of charms shape to represent themselves.
But the usage of charms were slowly died off because during the Renaissance period, as charms were labeled as primitive believe. This all happened because of books were mass-produced during Renaissance and people started to think that charms were actually nothing but just a superstitious believes. Charms were only used by those who were in the lower class of the society. This was so called the “Dark Age for Charms” but at early 20th century, charms began to pick up on where it was left off, when Queen Victoria wore a charm bracelet containing the photo of her family and also a lock of hair of her beloved husband, Prince Albert whenever she went. Because of this, people started to look at charms at the different angle. Charms were then labeled as a part of decorating piece for women. It had turned from superstitious believe purpose to a piece of jewelry. From there, many types of charms had been produced and sold to the market as jewelry. A lot of charms maker started to make charms to a lot of shape and from different materials. During World War II, charms had reached its best period of attention when soldiers started to buy charms as souvenirs to all cities that they had visited.
This trend has been going on until today, where charms are still popular among us and still plays an important to the modern fashion industries and also our life. Today, we can see in the market, there are a wide range of charms design for us to choose from ranging those designed based on zodiac, ancient symbols, and many more.
